Brief

SeaScapes, a landscape partnership initiative to protect and celebrate the area of coastline that stretches between the rivers Tyne and Tees and 6 miles out to sea, wanted to introduce visitors and locals to the multiple shipwrecks that lie out to sea and to uncover the rich heritage, fauna and flora within the project area.  

Our Response

We created an augmented reality GPS app that allowed location specific content to be accessed along the coastline some of which enabled visitors to explore with AR virtual recreations of some of key ships that currently lie beneath the waves. We incorporated geolocated AR photo-sliders to enable long lost villages and landmarks to be viewed on the landscape again. 

With a simple toggle, visitors can switch their map view from local landmarks and trail routes, to one that shows the constellation of shipwrecks that are scattered beneath the waves. 

In two visitor hub locations we created touchscreen interactives to allow visitors to access app content, explore 3D shipwreck models and play the Wreck Finder Expedition game.  

The response to the app and touchscreens has been positive, with really good visitor engagement across the project area.
