We brought the complex stories of wealth, power and dangerous liaisons at Caerphilly Castle to life using a combination of projection mapping and dynamic projection, to move the storyline around the castle, projecting onto objects in different rooms to bring an element of surprise and to allow the medieval magnificence of the castle to take centre stage. The visitor experience culminated in the use of dynamic projection with moving heads to tell the story of King Edward II’s great escape across the walls and tapestries of the refurbished Great Hall. The King and his lover, the despicable Hugh Despenser, are chased around the magnificent Great Hall by Queen Isabella and her army in surprising ways; climbing up tapestries, swinging across corners and hiding behind the corbels that bear their carved faces until they are captured and meet their grizzly fates.

Castles, by their nature, are notoriously inaccessible so we also wanted to provide a means for virtual exploration of areas above the accessible ground floor level by creating an interactive touchscreen tour, enabling visitors to explore all of the rooms above ground level in 360o and interact with the interpretation within them via hotspots.
